Facebook Implements Fix for iOS App Battery Draining Issues
While the latest Facebook app release notes don't include a reference to the issue, Facebook engineering manager Ari Grant wrote a post (via TechCrunch) explaining the issues behind the battery drain and what Facebook has done to fix it. According to Grant, there were several factors that contributed to the problem, including a "CPU spin" in the network code and silent background audio sessions that kept the app awake even when it wasn't open.
The first issue we found was a "CPU spin" in our network code. A CPU spin is like a child in a car asking, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?"with the question not resulting in any progress to reaching the destination. This repeated processing causes our app to use more battery than intended. The version released today has some improvements that should start making this better. When the Facebook battery draining issue first began circulating, MacStories' Federico Vittici hypothesized it was caused by silent audio running in the background, which turned out to be correct. Vittici believed Facebook used silent audio intentionally as a way to keep the app active in the background for tasks like pre-loading content, which he said showed "a deep lack of respect for iOS users."
The second issue is with how we manage audio sessions. If you leave the Facebook app after watching a video, the audio session sometimes stays open as if the app was playing audio silently. This is similar to when you close a music app and want to keep listening to the music while you do other things, except in this case it was unintentional and nothing kept playing. The app isn't actually doing anything while awake in the background, but it does use more battery simply by being awake. Our fixes will solve this audio issue and remove background audio completely.
Regarding today's comment from Facebook engineer Ari Grant, TechCrunch's Matthew Panzarino also suspects there's a possibility Facebook's use of background audio might have been done on purpose, despite Facebook's claim that it was an unintentional bug.
So if you believe Grant, this is a simple bug. It could happen to anyone etc etc. If you don't believe him, it was a thing Facebook was doing to make their app work a way they wanted it to but Apple didn't and they got caught. I'm not gonna pass any judgments here -- bugs happen all of the time and it's not fun to get pilloried over a simple mistake. Either way, attention was brought to it and it's fixed now.Grant says fixes have been implemented for both of the issues causing battery drain and Facebook users "should see improvements in the version released today." Facebook will also continue to improve the battery usage of its iOS app.

Apple Maps Adds Amtrak Routes in Northeastern U.S. and Transit Directions for Boston
Supported routes include the Northeast Regional, Acela Express, Keystone, Lake Shore Limited, Pennsylvanian, and Maple Leaf, many of which operate between cities in the Northeastern United States.
The Acela Express, for example, runs between Boston, New Haven, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC. Lake Shore Limited runs from New York/Boston to Albany to Chicago, while Maple Leaf runs from New York to Niagara Falls to Toronto.
Amtrak routes in the South, West, Midwest, and Northwest are not currently available in Apple Maps, but the information will likely be implemented as Apple expands transit information to additional areas across the United States. Transit directions are currently available in Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and San Francisco.
Along with Amtrak support for several cities where transit directions are supported, Apple has also added transit information for the Boston area. Boston was initially added to Apple's list of supported cities earlier this month, but the page was later updated to note the feature wouldn't officially be working until a later date in October.
As of this morning, transit directions are available in Boston, allowing Boston residents to access directions by Amtrak, commuter rail, buses, and more. The next city to gain transit directions will be Sydney, which was also added to Apple's list of supported cities earlier in the month. While Boston transit information is live, it does not yet appear to be available in Sydney.
(Thanks, Alec!)

'iPhone 7' Thickness Likely to Approach iPod Touch
The report also states that the company will stick to a similar Force Touch technology in next year's version of the iPhone, due to the heavy amount of time and investment Apple and its suppliers have put into adapting it for this year's "iPhone 6s" and "iPhone 6s Plus."
Due to this, Kuo believes that Apple is unlikely to switch from in-cell over to glass-on-glass touch panels next year, which a rumor out of Apple's supply chain in Asia suggested last week. The KGI report says that in-cell panels won't encounter any harsh production bottleneck issues, and that Apple won't be looking to create an iPhone display with a resolution of 4k or higher, so it's more likely for the company to stick with in-cell panels for the time being.
The continued use of in-cell panels would also grant Apple the ability to produce an iPhone as thin as Kuo's suggested 6.0mm-6.5mm size. Although glass-on-glass panels allow for the possibility of a bezel-free iPhone, it also limits the ability for the company to create smaller and thinner smartphones, so if KGI's claim of an iPod Touch-size iPhone is true, it would make most sense for the company to keep using in-cell panels.

Dinner at Lock 27 – Centerville, OH
I was pretty excited to revisit Lock 27 because this place is amazing. This time we brought a crowd and big appetites!
This time I tried a lemon drop martini (made with Belle of Dayton vodka!) and it really hit the spot – there’s nothing like lemon drinks in the heat of summer.
Have you tried their hummus? I’m pretty sure it has as many jalapenos as chickpeas – so it goes without saying that I LOVED it. I also loved that it came with tons of veggies and a variety of things to dip – not just one type of thing. It seems like most places bring you a ton of hummus and then only one thing to eat it with. Variety is the spice of life. Variety and jalapenos, that is.
Next I tried a flight of beers – I loved all of them, which is no surprise since Lock 27 brews their own amazing beer in house.
Dinner was easy because they had mac & cheese – when I’m in a comfort food mood, nothing else compares.
I’m so glad that we were able to get a fun group together to visit this super popular and delicious gastro pub!

iOS Continues to Lead Enterprise Despite Decline in Tablet Market

iOS saw its market share drop from 81% to 64% in the tablet market, a sharp decline from the iPad's previous 80% to 90% dominance in the enterprise, while Android grew from 15% to 25% during the second quarter. Windows rose from 4% to 11%, a notable increase given that Microsoft's operating system represented just 1% market share two quarters ago.
iOS continued to lead in regulated industries, including the public sector (79%), education (76%), healthcare (70%), insurance (65%) and financial services (63%). Meanwhile, Android moved ahead of iOS in the high-tech sector with 53% of device activations and also experienced growth in the energy (48%) and manufacturing (42%) sectors.
Good Technology's data is based on monthly activations among all its global customers that had at least five activated devices during the second quarter. The full-length Mobility Index Report Q2 2015 offers detailed insight on app, platform and device preferences among enterprise users.
